Prone
Prone foiling has the hardest entry of all disciplines. You paddle a low-volume board toward a wave and then pump to stay up. The two moments riders lose sessions are the paddle-in and linking between waves.
An assist changes both. A thrust pulse gets you on foil without needing a perfect wave, and carries you between sets so you don’t get exhausted paddling back. For prone, what matters is strong takeoff thrust and a low-profile system that doesn’t spoil the ride feel. Note that not all assists are suitable for low-volume prone boards, so check compatibility before buying.
Wing
Wingers live and die by the wind. When it drops, the session ends. An assist keeps you on foil during calms and lifts you before the wind comes in, turning marginal wind days into rideable days.
Wingers rarely need continuous, prolonged power. They need a clean boost to get up and small reinforcements in wind gaps. Here, takeoff thrust matters more than long battery life.
Downwind
Downwind is probably the discipline where an assist changes things the most. Catching bumps and linking them is brutally difficult, and a failed connection means long pumping or swimming. The thrust to get up and cover the gaps between bumps lets you ride lines you otherwise couldn’t maintain, and greatly smooths the learning curve.
